“Foxfire’s good life”

September 27, 2007

The following quote comes from the book Foxfire, by Joyce Carol Oates: “Legs saying, whispering, hugging her FOXFIRE sisters as they were hugging her, the five of them there in the parking lot at the rear of 2883 Branch Street, giddy, crazy-elated, half to disbelief, –we got him. The rest is gonna be easy.” (pg 298)

When i first read this quote, i thought to myself that it was a stupid quote.  I didn’t think it made any sense because most things in life don’t come easy.  I started to think about life in general and how that things that i work hard for i appreciate more.  I thought back to my childhood.  When i was younger and my grandparents would give me money, I would thank them, but it wouldn’t really mean anything to me.  If i worked for it by mowing the lawn, or by doing my chores for a week.  Working for money makes people appreciate it for the most part.  If a person is filthy rich and they make more money, then it might not appreciate it so much, compared to someone who isn’t all that rich and they earn a few extra dollars.  It is a great feeling knowing that you worked for what you have, instead of just being handed it.  Good things in life aren’t easy to obtain, it takes hard work and sacrifice to get what you really want.

I agree with you because i never appreciated money until I got a job. I think that it feels good to make money and not have to rely on our parents to give it to us anymore.

I agree. I also interpreted this quote as a little foreshadowing that something would go wrong. The Foxfire girls didn’t really work for what they earned; or at least not in a moral way. There is a big difference between birthday money and a check from work.

What does the “we got him” mean? Who? And what is “the rest”? Explain the quote a bit more.

I definitely agree with you. I feel a greater sense of accomplishment if I actually work hard for the money, or grade, that I earn. It may not be easy, but it is totally worth it.
